The Cost of Courage (Audible Audio Edition) Kelly Estes Dan McGowan Made for Success Books Reviews
This book contained only a little historical information, but, I found it was a well written account of war from a personal perspective. The author did an excellent job of conveying the thoughts and feelings of an idealistic boy who grew up on a farm and how he was changed by his experiences. It's a reminder of what my grandparent's generation went through, though most would never talk about. I think it took a lot of courage to write this story and I'm glad I bought the book and read it. I hope she writes more for me to read!
I had the good fortune to meet the author Kelly Estes in person at the Spirit of '45 Day in 2012 and we chatted for a few minutes. We talked about why she wrote this book, her experience with veterans and her community service. I came away very impressed by this young woman, and I expect to see her accomplish great things in the decades ahead. You heard it here first folks!
I bought the book from her and she was kind enough to sign it for me. I consider it to be an investment, not just a book. I have no doubt her autograph on this book will be worth something one day.
Now, about the book. She told me this is a fictionalized account based on what her uncles went through during the war. The story moves along very fast, told from the perspective of the brother who flew bombing missions against Germany and who is shot down and taken prisoner. While a prisoner, he finds out his brother was killed in action flying on the Doolittle raid against Japan. Though the surviving brother is crushed, he continues on, doing his best to survive and help other POWs during some very difficult circumstances. Once liberated, the brother must now deal with the survivors guilt he has, surviving when so many of his comrades, and his brother, didn't.
Yes, the ending brought a tear to my eye.

Very impressive work by 22 year old Kelly Estes! I will be anxious to see what she does next, she definitely is a talented and dedicated young lady.
What an amazing story! Anyone, especially those interested in the Military or History must read this story! Thank you to the Author for getting this story out for all to read!
An exciting read. A job WELL done. Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. I know you had a lot of fun doing your research. How wonderful. God bless.
My son, Danny, met Kelly and was deeply inspired by her. I have never witnessed my son with such an overwhelming admiration for someone. After he described their lunch experience, I knew I needed to read Kelly's book. I, too, was touched by her words. I'm sure we all have heard "war stories" from our families but the way Kelly writes about her family's experiences hit home. Kelly did an excellent job re-telling her Uncle's story. Can't wait for the next book.
Well written! Very vivid account of WWII. Well done young lady!!
Kelly you being so young has accomplished so much! You done a great job on your book and I'm sure your uncles would be very proud of you! This is not the type of book I would normally read but I totally enjoyed this one and found it hard to put down.
